Does By-polls result reflect End of Modi Wave?

As the results of the by-polls to the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats announced on Wednesday, the analysis has started emerging of the third front coalition and the end of Modi wave.  Undoubtedly, this win for Samajwadi Party (SP) and BJP (Bhartiya Janta Party) losing its seat especially of Gorakhpur needs in-depth analysis from the political scientists.  However, the apparent reason for this victory of SP is the formula of social engineering where veteran leader Mayawati’s BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) supported SP in this election.

We had seen the same social engineering in the state assembly election of Bihar when two major state parties – RJD (Rashtriya Janta Dal) and JDU (Janta Dal-United) decided to contest together and also won the majority seats. Therefore, it could be said that coming regional parties into a coalition against BJP increase the chances of winning of non-BJP forces.  Hence, an essential question of whether or not this alliance could continue for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

Moreover, social engineering works well in this election. A wave of Narendra Modi exist or not is a question, but the pattern shows that it is not the end of the Modi wave but an alliance of regional parties for now. And, such partnership in coming elections will fracture the vote bank of BJP.
