An FIR against Bihar BJP President Nityanand Rai for allegedly delivering a provocative speech on Friday (9 March) while campaigning for the Lok Sabha by-poll in Araria district of Bihar. Rai allegedly said “If the RJD candidate, Sarfaraz Alam, wins the election from Araria, the region would become an ISIS ( Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) den. And if the BJP’s Pradeep Kumar Singh wins, then the spirit of patriotism would increase in Araria.”

This is not the first time political leader found in such provocative speech in the public forum. Naresh Agarwal, a veteran SP leader joining BJP on Monday (12 March) made a sexist comment about Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan. “I was equated with those working in films… I was rejected for those who dance in films, work in films. I found it improper”, he said. However, BJP distanced itself from the comment, and foreign minister Sushma Swaraj took help of Twitter to condemned it.

Such statements not only hurt the emotion of particular community but also tell us the mentality of our political leaders, who further given the power to design policy and development agenda for the country. Therefore, it is crucial how our political leaders behave and what do they speak. This not only requires mass condemnation but also need to set up legal provision to punish such leaders and bar their role in parliamentary democracy.
